EPISODE 1 : SCHOOL AS A LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

NAME OF FS STUDENT: JENEVEBE M BEROY
COURSE: BSE - TLE
RESOURCE TEACHER: MR. ARMAN BONGCAWIL
COOPERATING SCHOOL: ICENHS

INTRODUCTION

As a future teacher, we have a task to done in field study 1 to observation, analyze and reflect of what being done outside and inside the school campus. Experience is a stepping stone to become a better teacher soon. So as to start, Iligan City East National High School is one of the resource school that I observed. As I enter the school campus, I  walk and look around the buildings is not fully developed but the construction is still on going. The soroundings was clean, there are so many trees that provides fresh air that the student can relax after their class.

CLASSROOM VISIT

1st observed in the classroom. Teacher is the most critical profession, because it is not easy to deal with each student who has different perceptions in life and their behaviours. Basically, in my first observation there are no rooms, the classes start outside the office near the stairway where the student seating in the floor, there are no chairs at all  while the blackboard  hanging in the wall. I think the students are not comfortable with their postion, even I who obsereved only, how much more the students, who will listen and copy about their discussion. And also the teacher, I know he is worrrying about the situation but he always motivate the students.

OBSERVERED, ANALYZE AND REFLECT

As  a student when they are at a school campus and  classroom it has a particular impact on learning  because it is a second home of each individuals. Where the teachers is the second mother/father in the school environment. Students learn more a lot by their teachers and also with the reinforcement of thier parents. Being a future teacher  in the said school environment, I think it is not easy for me especially if I am hadling a class that has no room. And  we will class outside  because lack of room and the students dont have enough chairs they dont even comfortable with their position. To set the mind of students and to have a greater knowledge we need  to have a  kind of school campus that is conducive to learning of students,in school campus is to have a complete building and its facilities that the students can use well. And in classroom, I think the best thing to do is that, to make the room colorful, lots of educational qoutes that can be posted and proper arrangement inside the room.

EPISODE 2: LEARNERS CHARACTERISTICS AND NEEDS

LEARNERS DEVELOPMENT MATRIX
Development Domain

High section And lower section students are similar in terms in their physical; the way the move, walk or run in the classroom. And also thier writing, drawing and etc. skills.

 Social

They were interact with thier teacher as needed, but most of students in lower section tends to be more aggressive even it is a nonsense questions or answer. As what I've observed.
 Emotional

As I look at them, they are always smiling while they are talking. When students quarrel  one of his classmate will shout and said to their teacher " sir ga away sila".
 Cognitive

High section and lower sections are different in term of their cognitive characteristics, based on my observation higher class are have more ideas and high knowledge more than lower section.

ANALYSIS

LEVEL
SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS OBSERVED
IMPLICATIONS TO THE TEACHING- LEARNING PROCESS
Highschool
Age range of learners observed 11-12 yrs. old

  •  High school students talk more with thier classmates.
  • Whe the teacher discuss their lesson they dont even listen.

  •  Teacher should anticipate of what his students doing.
  • Teachers will have a strong patients in his students.

REFLECTION

As I observed the learners, and as to recall my elementary and highschool days. In my own experience, our similarities just like them are that I always listen to the teachers discussions and cooperate when there is an activity. On the other hand, our differences is that I have this attitude that if I already understand the lesson I will not listen anymore to my teacher but instead I will do talking with my seatmates. Unlike the students I observed up to the last minute of the class they still listen very eagerly to their teacher.

The teacher I cannot forget was Maam. Mary Catera one of the terror teacher in my Alma Mater. She is known to be very strict, but very excellent in teaching; she’s also known to give so many handwritten outlines as a requirement for her to pass her subject. I remembered she is fond of recitations and she calls us in random, that’s why before attending class all of us make it sure that we reviewed the past lessons and make advanced reading on the next lesson because we don’t want her to get mad to us because we are too scared about what might happen. But as time pass by, I discovered that beyond her strict face and strong personality is a very loving and caring heart for her students. And now as I think of her, I also wanted to give credit to her because that helped me a lot academically and emotionally. The efforts I exerted, patience and perseverance helped me a lot for what knowledge I have now..

EPISODE 3: CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND LEARNING

CLASSROOM VISIT AND OBSERVATION

As I observed the classroom I noticed the different areas in the classroom for storage like the; cabinets containing the different books, there are also shelves containing their different educational activities; the learning aids or materials are placed on the teacher's table then to be posted in the blackboards. There are rules and regulations posted in their classroom such as “HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY” that could never been out inside the classroom and best rules for the students. Another posted that I have notice in their wall is “ EDUCATION IS THE ABILITY TO ALMOST ANYTHING WITHOUT LOSING YOURSELF CONFIDENCE” yes as we go through our studies our self confidence will boost because of the learning that we have learned. And Of course the students participated in making their home room rules because they are the one involved with this practice. The daily routines are: the class starts with a prayer then continues with the checking of attendance done by the home room teacher, the class discussion and when the classes end they end it with a prayer also. The seating arrangement is not in order so that students can seat freely but not allowed to talk when the class is about to start. And if a learner does not follow instructions given to him or her teacher provides a disciplinary action and after the teacher asks nicely why he or she did not follow and will make the students realize that they should follow. The teacher do to reinforce positive behavior is by talking nicely to the students and being a good role model to them.

ANALYSIS

1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learners' behavior?

· The classroom organization and routines affect the learners' behavior by knowing their limitations. The minds of the students are already set that they have rules and regulations to followed, and they will practice their proper attitude and act politely.

2. What should the teacher have in mind when he/she designs the classroom organization and routines? What theories and principles should you have in mind?

·  Teacher should have in mind that he or she mingles with his/her students so that he or she will be more have an interaction with their students and as a second mother in the classroom, they should make it to a point that the students are oriented and they participate while making the rules. And also the teacher should prepare a presentations that students can learn and they will enjoy before the classe to start  so that the students will not get bore and will retain the interest in studying.

3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners? In motivating students? Why were they effective?

· Behavior strategies  were effective in managing the behavior of the learners are by doing positive reinforcement. The teacher should play the characteristics of being caring, loving and should motivate the learners to pursue their efforts in their study by giving rewards or incentives if the student performs excellence in class whether academically or non-academically by doing this so, the students will strive hard, will actively participate and will perform very well.

REFLECTION

As a observant, I learn so many things that can help me and apply to my upcoming future teaching profession. As I imagine myself organizing my classroom in the future, I see that I will be handling grade 7 students.  I will do routines or procedures that will surely suit their age range. For example when the class starts I will always let them pray first before anything else, I would also imply that there would be bible story telling session just for a minute and slowly going to the subject matter in a way that they will not feel hazard but instead they will enjoy. I could also conduct ice breakers, a little dance step and singing an old song to stimulate the energy of the students. And I will also provide few minutes for rest because during this stage of the learners they will surely get tired as time and activities pass by. And I will implement rules such as: Wear proper uniform, Boys should observe proper haircut, Boys and Girls should observe proper hygiene all the times and lastly wear Id's in classes time. I choose these set of rules so that the students will always aware that being a students must be follow the following rules. I would also like to promote unity inside the classroom and good relationship between Me and the students.
Learner should involved in making this rules for the main reason that they will be the one who will benefited and will follow these set of rules. And they should also be aware of these rules so that they will know their limitations.

EPISODE 4: INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES AND LEARNERS INTERACTION ( as their age, gender, racial groups, religious and ethnic backgrounds)

Observation Report

As I observed the Grade 7 students handled by Mr. Arman Bongcawil by the time I visited, I noticed the different approaches of interaction by the students to everyone in the classroom. The students interact with their teacher when they have a question to ask to their teacher or participitang in the class. Teacher and his student has gap in terms of their status, students should always obey with his/her teachers and respect politely. On the other hand, the students interact with their classmates in a very comfortable manner, very ease and with no hesitations. There are students or group of students who interact mostly with their teacher. While observing the learners who seated at the front and the back, I noticed that they behave and at the same time they listen attaintively. They interact actively, during class discussion, they raise their hands to answer the teacher’s question and when they want to share their ideas during the subject matter.
The relationship among the learners is very closely they treated as a one section a brothers and sister in the classroom. They accept ones ideas and thoughts; but sometime it is unavoidable that they get in quarrel but as I've observed after a minute they will become friends again. Students cooperate with one another especially during group works, each member participate and shares his or her insights. In the class of sir Bongcawil if the student didn't answer his question, he/she will still remain stand until one of his/her classmates can help them to answer.

ANALYSIS

         1.   Identify the persons who play key roles in the relationships and interactions in the classrooms. What roles do they play? Is there somebody who appears to be the leader, a mascot/joker, an attention seeker, a little teacher, a doubter/pessimist?

The main persons who play key roles in the classroom is the teacher himself or herself and of course the learners. The teacher plays the role of a facilitator he or she guides and facilitates the learner when doing their perspective works. There are students who plays to be a class leader, she is the one who facilitates and control the noise level and regulates her classmates when the teacher is not around; there are a lot of jokers in the class they usually balance the class and make a light atmosphere when the class gets too boring, they usually crack jokes to make the class happy; there is also an attention seeker in the class, he will surely get the attention of the teacher by doing different acts and some of this acts is not good but still he will do it just to get attention; there are also little teachers in the class, they teach their other classmates when some of them didn’t understand the lesson, these students are very caring and have the heart to help others; there are also doubters or pessimist in the class who easily gets disappointed and stop working on a certain activity when they find it very difficult or hard.

         2. How does the teacher influence the class interaction considering the individual differences of the students?

The teacher greatly influence the individual differences of the students by not having biases. The teacher should treat his or her students equally so that the students will feel that they are all the same in the eyes of their teacher.

3.What factors influence the grouping of learners outside the classroom?

I think the factors that influence the grouping of learners outside the classroom is their common interests. Because as an individual you will go with the group that you’ll feel the sense of belongingness and where you can share your likes and dislikes because as you join a certain group this will reflect who you are.

REFLECTIONS

When I’m in the classroom, I already feel that I’m already a teacher, sometimes if the teacher is not around i will be to take charge the students. I also feel the sense of being a oneness with the learners because I also get knowledge from him when he is duscussing, and can really help me and apply for my future profession. In the future, I want my students to interact with me and their classmates in a way that they will never hesitate to ask or answer.. I want them to express freely what they feel in a good manner. I will make this happen by briefing them and by letting they know the essence of harmony in the classroom and making them realize that we will all benefit if we practice this type of interaction. And  I will  always encourage all the learners regardless of their differences to interact and participate by letting them know that even we have our own differences we still have to participate and interact with others because after all we are in a world with different characteristics, attitudes, personalities, religious beliefs and differences but we are all sons on God's Almighty that’s why we should interact with one another no matter we have different views in life.

EPISODE 5: INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES AND LEARNER INTERACTION

OBSERVATION REPORT

As I observed the class, individual differences among learners was shown,  there are learners who are really attentive during the class discussion and there are also others who were just sometimes listen to the discussion but the attention span is too short and there are others who really fond of making noise during the discussion. As I am observing the learners, those who are seating in the front are those pupils who are performing well and those who are seating at the back who are fond of making noises are those pupils who are low performing. I also observed the higher section vs. lower section, it has a big difference in terms of thier behavior and cognitive learning because higher sections tends to be a good learner, who always listen and very interactive in the discussions and not totally noisy. while the lower class, although they are interacting with their teachers but not in manner, they always make fun with his/her classmates. One thing that happened during my observation, the teacher lost his temper that leads him to scold his students. That's was the first time I saw him being mad, I think he don't have enough patient because the students show their bad attitudes.

ANALYSIS

                 1.  Did your observation match the information given by the teacher? Were you able to correctly identify who among the students performed well and who did not? What behavior helped you identify them? (volunteering to answer, responding to teacher's directions, etc.)

In my observation the information matched that has given by the teacher. I conclude that most students who performed well and some not so actively performing well. Students behavior helped me identify the well performing students is that they are very fond of raising their hands when the teacher asks them several questions about the subject matter, and also I be able to identify those students who are not so good in class by means of when the teacher asks them a particular question they wouldn't be able to answer the question and often when the teacher asks them they just remain quiet.

2. Describe the differences in ability levels of the students in the class. Is there a wide gap between the students who are performing well and those that are not?

Those students who perform well in the class have the ability to fully understand the lesson while those students who performed not so well takes a longer time for them to understand the lesson. And Its hard for them to cope up the lesson especially the teachers discuss another lessons.

3.Describe the methods used by the teacher in handling the students' differences in abilities. How did the students respond to the teacher?

Teachers used methods in handling a class to her students whether their cognitive ability is high or low achiever they treat them equally. She addresses the class as a whole and not by making her students think that there is a barrier among those students who performed well than those who are not.

REFLECTION

In the near future as I will be teaching the next generation, I will never forget this desire of letting the students understand all of the lessons. An it could never been deny that there are learners whos is slow and high, it is not enough if only some can fully understand it. It must be the class as a whole because all of them deserve equal right and treatment.

EPISODE 6: HOME- SCHOOL LINK

OBSERVATION

It is important to know that there is a direct communication towards the parents and the teacher to guide the children, the teacher has the power to announce into the parents about the child deeds. This episode is all about the Home School link which means between the school and at home their should be an interaction to each other. In the school the responsible into the children is the teacher and into home the parents takes a big responsible. The fact that the teacher only hold a little time to the student but they can predict the attitudes of the children because the teacher knows and meet the student in the class, almost a over the day.
ANALYSIS

Their are many kinds of parenting, you will identify it towards their attitudes in the class. The way they socialized and their ways of beliefs, a learner will always acquire it through the way parents handle them. The learner will always had another personality if he is is other environment. The family factors that the learner contribute will always reflect to them, as well as in the teacher side. The development of the child will deffer to what kind of family they had. Since the teacher holds the children when they are in the school, they contribute the big factors to their learning in terms of cognitive. The effect of the kind od living and beliefs they had will reflect to what king of learner you are.

REFLECTION

We have different development, we are unique and we had different personalities. A kind of family that I have been is my internal attitude that I will always carry, that signifies me. In my outer attitudes is develop through environment. The impact of society and community we belong has a big value to us. The learner may adapt or reject the kind of learnings given to him. Being a future teacher, I should be careful in delivering the thought towards my students because being a teacher you are the role model and be responsible to the eyes of your student.
